Let’s Connect

Mathias is a Partner at b2venture, where he backs founders building marketplaces, platforms, and software businesses – especially those with the potential to unlock powerful network effects. He holds the strong belief that truly exceptional startups can only be built by truly exceptional founders — people who are obsessed with solving a particular problem and willing to take the non-obvious path to get there.

With over 15 years in European and transatlantic venture capital and M&A, Mathias has personally led investments in more than 70 startups and supported founders through over 200 funding rounds. “There’s something incredibly rewarding about helping purpose-driven founders find the levers that turn a good product into a self-sustaining network. That’s where magic happens.”

Before joining b2venture, Mathias was General Partner at Speedinvest. There, he built and led its 9-person Marketplaces & Consumer team, raised and deployed over €100M across two dedicated vertical funds, and invested in more than 70 marketplace startups, including TIER Mobility, CoachHub, Kittl, and Planetly (now part of OneTrust). He also established Speedinvest’s Berlin office and founded The Marketplace Conference, which grew into Europe’s leading event for marketplace funders and founders.

Earlier in his career, Mathias helped shape the marketplace investment strategy at Point Nine Capital, supporting early-stage investments in companies like Revolut, Docplanner, Brainly, Xeneta, Goodays, and StuDocu. He also gained hands-on operational experience as General Manager at Uniplaces, where he relaunched and scaled the company’s German operations, and as Head of M&A and Corporate Development at ricardo Group (then part of Naspers). “Working not only as a VC, but also as a strategic investor and operator taught me how important it is to balance vision with execution – and to never underestimate how hard founders work to bring ideas to life.”

Mathias started his venture career at Mountain Partners, where he backed early European marketplace successes like Lieferando and reBuy.

“I’ve always been drawn to businesses where network effects can create compounding value – for founders, users, and investors alike. At b2venture, I see the opportunity to support those ambitious ideas, together with a uniquely deep angel community that brings experience and conviction to the table.”

If you’re building something ambitious in Europe — especially in the platform or marketplace space — and you’re deeply obsessed with your mission, Mathias would love to hear from you.

When Mathias isn’t working with founders or exploring the intricacies of network effects, he’s usually chasing his two young children around Berlin’s parks, sparring on the kickboxing mat, or planning the family’s next travel adventure. Seeing the world through his kids’ eyes keeps him grounded — and constantly reminds him why long-term thinking matters.
